Oaxaca hosts the unconventional, unconference, the Responsible Tourism Fair January 30 - February 9.
A group of friends in Oaxaca,Mexico are creating the Responsible Tourism Fair, our 11th event since 2001 and a veritable model of the local travel movement and slow travel.

There is no cost to participate other than meals, shopping and accommodation.
The 2011 Responsible Tourism Fair takes place in multiple locations in Oaxaca City and surrounding towns. Visitors have a number of options, including weaver-guided walks in Teotitlán del Valle, photosafaris in public parks and authentic indigenous meals including Caldo de Piedra (Chinanteco), Maatsy (Ayuuk) and tamales (Zapotec and Ayuuk style). Self-guided treasure hunts asks foodies to try various cheeses, chocolates and mezcal. Photographers are invited to share photos in relevant Flickr Groups with prizes to be awarded.

Why begin the event in January? January offers a new calendar, a fresh start and plenty of ways to plant the seeds of optimism for the year ahead. How much does it cost to participate? - Participation is free. We encourage visitors to buy direct from locals and in particular the co-hosts of the events. What is an unconference? - An unconference is a facilitated, participant-driven conference centered on a theme or purpose. An unconference is a looser type of event that engages participants without using an agenda. An unconference encourages discourse among attendees connecting online and creating local events. What is the outcome of the Responsible Tourism Fair? - Look for this page to be updated on a regular basis and in particular during the week of the fair. We'll be making updates to other pages and resources on Planeta.com with information and feedback collected during the fair. Any other suggestions?Think about what you love about travel. Think about the wonderful people you have met and the great places you have had the privilege to visit.
Misc
The 2011 event builds on the annual tourism fairs organized by Planeta.com and friends in Oaxaca, Mexico since 2001.
The event has gone by many names: Alternative Tourism Fair, Ecotourism Fair, Rural Tourism Fair and in the past three years, the Responsible Tourism Fair. The format has also changed from a big one-day get-together at Amigos del Sol language school to a more expansive week-long event in various locations.
All of the Responsible Tourism Fair is designed by the participants, the locals and visitors. Locals host food tastings, fotosafaris and heritage walks. Visitors are encouraged to talk up their interest in Oaxaca before, during and after the event.
The Responsible Tourism Fair is Web friendly -- much of the event is documented online Facebook, Flickr, Foursquare, Gowalla, Twitter and YouTube. Locals and visitors are encouraged to upload photos during the event to Flickr Groups
A few words about photography
One of the hallmarks of the Responsible tourism fair is that most of the events are photographed by the participants - locals and visitors. We encourage participants to share their favorites via Flickr and YouTube. As part of our commitment to Responsible Travel Photography we ask photographers to first ask permission. Want to be responsible and have fun? Upload photos to Flickr. Featured groups include World Food , Árboles de Oaxaca (Oaxaca Trees), Si Mas Bicicletas (Yes more bicycles) and World Market. Online viewers can show support by favoriting the photos taken during the fair or adding pictures from your corner of the world.
Treasure Hunt Competitions (Concursos)
ARBOLES/TREES - We are asking participants to submit photos of notable trees of Oaxaca in the Arboles de Oaxaca Group. Participants receive a diploma (constancia). Winners receive a book (árbol muerto).
REFRAMING OAXACA - We are asking participants to submit photos of the iron frames in Oaxaca City to the World Signs Group .
